Is Your Junction Box Really IP68 Waterproof?
A junction box that fails doesn't usually fail on day one. It fails after a season of rain finds the one seam that wasn't quite sealed, or after UV exposure turns a cheap gasket brittle, or after a cable gland that was never really matched to the wire diameter finally lets water track in along the conductor. By the time anyone notices, there's corrosion on the terminals and a troubleshooting job that should have been a five-minute connection.
This is the gap between a box that's labeled waterproof and one that's actually rated and built to stay that way — and it's worth understanding before you bury one, mount one outdoors, or use one in a wash-down environment.

IP68 vs. the Ratings That Sound Similar
Junction box listings throw around IP ratings that look close but mean very different things in practice:
- IP54 / IP55 — dust and splash protected, fine for a covered, sheltered location, not for direct rain or ground contact
- IP65 / IP66 — protected against water jets, suitable for most exterior wall-mounted boxes exposed to rain and wash-down, but not for submersion
- IP67 — withstands temporary immersion, roughly 1 meter for 30 minutes; adequate for boxes in flood-prone but not permanently wet locations
- IP68 — rated for continuous or extended submersion at a depth and duration the manufacturer specifies; this is the rating you actually need for underground burial, dock and marina wiring, irrigation systems, and any box that sits in standing water rather than just getting rained on
A box marketed simply as "waterproof" without a specific IP number attached is the biggest red flag in this category — it's a marketing term, not a rating, and it tells you nothing about how the box performs under actual water exposure.
Where Junction Boxes Actually Leak
The enclosure body is rarely the failure point — most are molded as a single sealed shell. The failures cluster around the openings:
- Cable entry glands. If the gland's rated cable diameter range doesn't match the actual cable OD, even by a millimeter, water finds the gap. Unused knockouts left open, or sealed with tape instead of a proper plug, are just as common a culprit.
- Lid gasket compression. IP68 boxes rely on even gasket pressure across the entire lid seam. Over-tightened screws can pinch and tear a gasket; under-tightened screws leave gaps. Cross-pattern tightening, like lug nuts on a wheel, gets more even pressure than working around the perimeter in order.
- Mounting orientation. Boxes rated for submersion assume a specific orientation in testing. Mounting a box upside down or at an angle it wasn't tested in can trap water against a seam that was only ever validated one way.
Matching the Box to the Application
- Underground and direct-burial wiring — needs a genuine IP68 box, ideally one rated for direct burial specifically, not just submersion in open water
- Solar combiner and junction connections — IP68 with UV-stabilized housing material, since these sit in direct sun for the life of the installation
- Marina, dock, and marine wiring — IP68 with corrosion-resistant hardware; standard steel screws rust even inside a sealed box if humidity gets trapped during assembly
- Irrigation and agricultural field wiring — IP68, plus attention to cable entry gland count, since these boxes often need multiple entries for zone wiring
- Outdoor lighting and landscape wiring — IP67 is often sufficient for above-ground, rain-exposed fixtures; IP68 for anything buried or near standing water
Before You Install
Check the actual cable OD against the gland's rated range, don't assume "universal" glands fit everything. Plug every unused knockout with a proper rated plug, not tape or silicone alone. Tighten the lid in a cross pattern to even out gasket pressure. And confirm the box's tested orientation matches how you're actually going to mount it — a detail that's easy to skip and one of the more common reasons a genuinely IP68-rated box still ends up with water inside.
The rating on the box tells you what it's capable of. Whether it delivers that in the field comes down to the gland match, the gasket compression, and the install — the same three things that trip up almost every "waterproof" enclosure that wasn't.
