  • IPX6 — protected against powerful water jets. Common on outdoor-rated extension cord connectors and power strip enclosures.
  • IPX7 — withstands temporary immersion, about 1 meter for 30 minutes. This is the baseline you actually want for anything exposed to standing water, low-lying installs, or heavy rain pooling.
  • IPX8 — rated for continuous submersion. Necessary for connectors used below grade, near pools, docks, or in flood-prone areas.

A connector advertised simply as "waterproof electrical connector" with no IP number listed is the single biggest red flag in this category. If the listing doesn't specify the rating, assume it hasn't been tested to one.

Certification vs. Self-Reported IP Ratings

An IP rating a manufacturer claims and an IP rating verified by an independent lab (UL, ETL, CE with actual test documentation) are not the same guarantee. This matters more for waterproof plug connectors than almost any other electrical component, because the failure mode — water intrusion causing a short or ground fault — is a safety issue, not just a performance one. For anything used in a permanent outdoor installation, especially where local code applies, look for a connector with third-party certification behind the IP claim, not just a number printed on the packaging.

  • Confirm the IP rating applies to the mated connector, and check separately whether the unmated end has its own rating or needs a cap
  • Look for actual certification marks (UL, ETL) rather than a bare IP number with no test reference
  • Match the connector's current and voltage rating to your actual load — a waterproof housing doesn't compensate for an undersized contact
  • Check the cable entry gland's rated diameter against your actual cable, the same failure point that shows up across almost every category of waterproof connector

A genuinely waterproof plug connector earns that label through the mated-state rating, the gland fit, and independent certification — not through the word printed on the listing. Checking those three things before ordering catches most of the connectors that would otherwise fail six months into an outdoor installation.
