Splicing and re-splicing the same wire repeatedly shortens the usable wire length each time, adds labor for every service visit, and risks a lower-quality connection with each re-splice compared to a connector that was designed to mate and unmate cleanly.

  • Using a permanent splice for something that gets serviced regularly.   • Using a circular connector for a genuinely permanent, one-time connection. Overspecifying a serviceable connector for a buried or sealed connection that will never be touched again adds cost and complexity with no real benefit — the splice does the same job for less.
  • Mixing connector types inconsistently across a product line, which increases spare parts complexity and creates confusion in the field about which cables are actually interchangeable.

  • Standardized interface needed across multiple product modules → circular plug connector, even if a splice would work for any single connection in isolation
  • Mixed installation (permanent field wiring feeding into a serviceable equipment interface) → splice for the permanent run, circular connector right at the equipment interface

The water-resistance question gets answered the same way either direction. The real decision is about how the connection gets used after install day — and that's usually the detail that gets skipped when a project defaults to whichever connector type the team already has on hand.
